Jäine is a new generation runo song ensemble of four professional singers from the disciplines of folk music, pop and jazz. Founded by Vilma Jää, a folk musician specialising in traditional Ingrian ensemble runo singing, the group’s repertoire consists of Jää’s tradition-inspired compositions where the singers’ technical skills have a chance to shine. The ensemble’s glorious harmonies are created through heterophony – in other words, improvised polyphony – and their arrangements are created in collaboration, some pre-rehearsed and others emerging in the moment.
