Curating the Etno-Espa programme is always a fun and exciting puzzle. There are dozens of proposals to go through, memories of past performers to consider, and the goal is to assemble a diverse lineup that showcases the wide spectrum of the genre. Each piece of the puzzle must work both independently and as part of the whole — within the framework of the available financial resources. Budget cuts in the cultural sector pose challenges for festivals as well, which is why we are particularly proud to present our stunning programme once again.
The festival opens with a performance by Hilja Grönfors, Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of the Arts, Art Academic, and expert in Romani music, along with her ensemble Latšo Džinta. The opening concert kicks off a week and a half of music, during which audiences can dive e.g. into folk fusion, Moroccan gnawa music, northern flamenco, or blend of folk song and Americana. Alongside familiar instruments like the violin and accordion, the stage may feature the Chinese guzheng, jouhikko, steel guitar, pan flute, or live electronics. Special concerts for children are held in the middle of the festival.
The event concludes with the Night of the Arts concerts. The first of these fills the Espa stage with the audiovisual world created by Sámi joiker Anna Näkkäläjärvi-Länsman and her team. After Ánnámáret, the audience will be treated to a concert by Kimmo Pohjonen, produced by the Savoy Theatre.
Welcome to enjoy — whether just a piece or the full picture!
